Rottweilers are extremely loyal dogs and are always out to make their owners happy. They are both intelligent and loyal so training them is not an issue if rightly done. All they need is a little of your time each day which will make them adjust and adapt well to your family. Teaching commands to the pup will make them both disciplined and happy.

Start early at 7-8 weeks and keep the commands fun to hold their attention. Use rewards and praise immediately after they obey. Keep the commands short, distinct, and sharp. Be consistent and train the pup when it is alert and willing. Train in short sessions to hold their attention. 10-15 minutes for each session is sufficient. 5-15 reps of each command repeated 2-3 times a day is sufficient for teaching commands to your Rottie.

Teaching Commands

1. This is the first command for your pup. Keep plenty of toys in hand. They tend to chew at this phase of their life. 5. The ‘paw’ command is useful when you want to clip their nails. Have your pup sit, pick up their paws, and say ‘paw’. Don’t forget the treat once they obey.

6. The ‘no’ or ‘stop’ command is useful. Rottweiler pups love to mouth objects and when they pick up something forbidden then use that command and gently take it away. Use the command until they learn to stay away from such items.

When his son, Chris Jnr, died from heart issues just at the age of 43, Chris was devastated. He got a dog from the shelter. When he first saw the rescue dog, a Rottweiler, he did not think of adopting it. He was too old – 6 years already. But when the two looked at each other, something clicked. They had to be together.

He called the protective Rottie – Jack. Jack also helped him find his love. The divorced Chris met another divorcee, Margaret, and they fell in love. At the wedding, Jack, the protective Rottie was their best man. He even sneezed when they took their vows and said the blessed, ‘I do’.

But there is another memory of Jack. One day, the protective Rottie saw that Chris was not coming out for his morning walk. So, Jack slithered into the bedroom and found him lying down. Quite concerned, the Protective Rottie lapped the hanging hand of Chris and he came around. He felt like a drunkard. He was taken to the hospital and it was found that his sugar levels were dangerously low. At around 2.5, when it should be at 7. The doctors mentioned that if there was any delay, he may not have survived.

Well, Jack, the protective Rottie, saved him. And according to Chris, he has saved him from a diabetic coma about 3 times. After all, he is truly a man’s best friend.

Rottweilers are quite energetic. They love to skip around and play. However, where the adults are wise, puppies tend to be a little bit too enthusiastic. Add the childish curiosity to it and you have a perfect recipe for mischief and madness.

Fifi, a rottweiler puppy in a Hastings home, had all the ingredients ready for trouble. When her owner was around, she remained mostly calm and under control. But then, curiosity got the better of her just when her owner left. She started playing around and might have gotten a little bit too curious when he spotted a cinderblock along with holes. Well, the structure of it, though quite dull, must have interested the puppy a bit too much.

When the woman, her owner, came back, she was shocked. Her puppy has somehow squeezed her head into the cinderblock and now, it was stuck. The head of this six-month Rottweiler puppy was wedged in one of the holes in the cinderblock. The shocked woman tried her best to get the puppy out of this trap, but all her efforts went to vain. It was difficult to get the puppy out without any external help. After her attempts, the woman called for help to the St. Johns County Communications Center. People came in from the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office. They used the traditional method of soap and water to slip the head out of the hole. But that too did not work. The hole was too tight and the puppy was still stuck.

This Is Kylo, The Rescue Dog, Who Loves To Hug People And Sleep In Their Laps

There are many dogs picked up by shelters – abandoned, struggling dogs going through a terrible phase in their lives. Kylo was one of them. He was in the shelter like so many other shelter dogs but then, he was rescued by Meghan Sweers.

Meghan was able to identify what Kylo lacked. Lots of love. Being abandoned has made the dog feel like he doesn’t deserve any love. But then, Meghan came in and became the ‘one’ Kylo was waiting for. Nowadays, Kylo, the rescue dog, is desperate for some cuddle time. He will keep following Meghan all over the place with a sad face until she gets down and gives him those lovely cuddles.

Kylo did not have this lovely time throughout his life. Kylo was just 10 months old when he was put in a shelter. From there, he was taken to a foster home. There he lived for ages with no one looking at him or showing any love to this poor animal. And then, by luck, Sweers came in with her husband and spotted this lovely dog.

Even the first night was a night of immense celebration. Kylo, the rescue dog, would slither into Sweers lap and then, slowly tuck his head just under her chin. Once he got into this comfortable position, Kylo dozed off. He started snoring like some heavy machinery. Once Meghan saw this wonderful thing, he knew that they had to keep Kylo anyhow.

Kylo continues to hug people any time they arrive. He has found his wonderful home and his wonderful family. But he tries to extend his family more. Whenever he meets someone, he climbs on their lap and starts to hug them. In the process, he also falls asleep in their lap. He has the power to make anyone his family, even if he does so a little bit forcibly.

Meghan is not left behind though. Whenever she enters the house, Kylo, the rescue dog, is waiting for a long session of hugs. Once she sits to take off her shoes, Kylo is there on her lap.

Well, Kylo deserves all the love in the world. And he surely has a way of taking every bit of it.

Most of us love dogs and would like to make them our companions. However, even if we were financially capable of taking care of a dog, many of us try not to engage in this desire. Out of many reasons, one of it can be the restrictions that we might face. Even now, there are many hotels which do not allow pet animals and that makes traveling difficult. Many transport facilities also restrict dogs from traveling. Well, they might have their own reasons for it. But what about service dogs?

Service dogs are not pet dogs – they are dogs hired to guide and help people who might have some disability. For example, if a blind man hires a dog to be his companion and help him crossroads and promote a general state of well-being for his life – then, that dog is a service animal. The ADA or Americans with Disabilities Act has clearly stated that if a trained service animal is being used by a person with some disability, then that service animal cannot be restricted from entering a hotel unless the animal is behaving in an unacceptable manner. So, when the directive is clear, there should not be any worries for people with a training dog, right?

Well, the law is not followed by everyone and that’s the shock that David Cornelius was to receive. He is a veteran who suffers due to many service-related disabilities. So, he depends on his assistant dog, Juliana, to have a normal way of life. But when he went to get a room at Bentonville Hotel, he was denied service. The reason: the hotel had a no-animals policy. The security escorted David out and that was at 3 am in the morning. Juliana showed no sign of unruly behavior and so, it was a strange dismissal – a blatant abuse of the law. David even showed the official necessary paperwork but they were not willing to listen.

We can’t completely blame the hotel though. There are people who tend to frame certain disability and force themselves in such hotels. As usual, these fake people make real disabled people face a lot of harassment. That is what David faced that night. They had to spend the entire night in their car. A terrible tragedy, no doubt.

Hopefully, if more people read about these stories, they will be aware of the ADA guidelines and hotels would stick to the law.

Cane Corso Or Rottweiler: Which Is The Best Guard Dog?

Fierce but loyal dogs, both the Cane Corso and the Rottweiler are prized all over the world as guard dogs. Not only are they amazing pets, but they also give people a sense of security just by their very presence. While it is easy to mix up the two, they’re quite different. Consider this a showdown between the breeds. The battle of the breeds if you will.

Of course, this isn’t Pokemon and we aren’t going to make them actually battle. This will be a fight using only facts. For example, the Cane Corso is Italian while the Rottweiler is German and that might make a difference for some. Both are Molossian Mastiffs and fairly large dogs. The Cane Corso goes around up to 60-68 cm and weighs 40-50 kg. The Rottweiler is slightly smaller only going up to around 56-59 cms and weighing up to 35-60 kg.

Saved By The Fish! The Graft That Saved A Rottweiler’s Life

Stella was just a one-year-old pup when she ran out of a house that was on fire. However, she was so badly burned that she had to be kept in a specially made oxygen saturated kennel for half a month. Fortunately, Stella was able to make a full recovery and that is all thanks to a brand new skin graft that might very well be the next big thing in modern veterinary medicine.

Madison Darmer, the daughter of Stella’s owner, set up a GoFundMe for her and wrote about her experience. Their house had started burning when no one was around and the dogs were stuck inside. Stella was taken to the MSU (Michigan State University) vet clinic to be treated for her burns and exposure to smoke. Luckily the other dog was just in shock and had only sustained a leg injury.

The Michigan State University, in their official statement to the press, spoke through Brea Sandness, DVM, BS, who is a surgical resident at their vet clinic. According to her, Stella was brought in with serious burns everywhere, from her head to her tail. Her condition was so serious that her team of doctors didn’t want to put her under anesthesia. But not all hope was lost.

During the Camp Fire wildfires in California, tilapia skin was used by vets as a natural bandaid for animals that had been burned in the fire. But it isn’t something that is commercially available in America.

Lucky for everyone concerned, Dr. Sandness remembered this and she got in touch with an organization in Iceland called Kerecis that sold something called an Omega3 Wound. They had also researched the material extensively and cod skin after descaling had already received FDA approval. The only issue was that they hadn’t actually tried it on animals. But Dr. Sandness felt sure that if it could be used on humans, it would work for Stella as well.

Through a generous donation, Kerecis sent the cod skin overnight so that Stella could get the graft as soon as possible. Her team of doctors had no issues working with it and if everything goes as planned, Stella’s body will just absorb the cod skin and replace it with a fresh layer of tissue.

In the official statement, Dr. Sandness revealed that Stella’s body had absorbed the skin and since it had some anti-inflammatory properties, she was actually safer from infection and in a lot less pain than she would have been. It was an inspiring case for the team to work on and it proved that these skin grafts might just become a very useful aid to vets.

If you check out the GoFundMe, you’ll see that Stella is once again a joyful pup but those who were there will tell you that she is a true warrior.

Not even a blazing inferno could snuff out her will to live and that is indeed a miracle. And a Rottweiler being saved with the help of this skin graft is something really amazing!

Just like human babies, their bodies are slowly developing so it is important to know how much they need to eat. Over their growing period, their appetite might seem like it is going haywire. But as long as they don’t go more than a day without eating their food, they’ll usually be fine.

You need to know their body measurements plus approximately how big they’ll grow, to know how much food to give them. It also depends on what you’re feeding them.

What Nutrients Do They Need

Calcium is an essential mineral to make their bones stronger and to boost their immunity. They need to get about 3 gms of calcium per 1000 kcal of food. Another important mineral is phosphorus which works along with calcium. The perfect ratio of calcium to phosphorus is never more than 1:3 and never less than 1:1 unless your doctor prescribes a different amount.

The Right Amount To Grow Strong

Since your pup depends on you completely to nurture them, you can’t let them become obese. The right kind of food is necessary to strengthen their immunity and to prevent them from developing neoplasia or cancer. Ideally, your pup should gain around 1 kg every week. Get them puppy food and check their weight often.

Perfect Quantities

Rather than winging it, talk to your vet and come up with a feeding chart you can follow. Too many vitamins and minerals can seriously mess up their skeletal system so measure everything out correctly.

Bringing Them Up

You need to be careful with your pup from the third to the eighth month, and again for about six months after they turn a year old. They usually reach their full size around then but you should keep them on puppy food during these stages. Once they are almost at their full size you can start feeding them dog food.

What Do I Feed My Puppy?

Food for puppies comes in four categories. First, there’s dry kibble which is available commercially. It gives your puppy a balanced meal and you don’t need to feed them any supplements unless the vet deems so. Then you have wet food but large breeds don’t really need it if the dry kibble is working well for them. But when they fall sick you can feed them wet food to keep them hydrated.

Thirdly you could also make food at home but keep in touch with a nutritionist. This is especially important if your pup has an allergy. But you might need to give them additional supplements so that they stay healthy. Lastly, there’s the raw food diet. While it is all the rage right now you need to be careful. Research shows that this can upset the calcium-phosphorus balance in their bodies leading to orthopedic issues. The bacteria in raw foods might also be too strong for a puppy’s immunity to handle. You could always feed them kibble till they grow old enough to handle the transition.

Experiment with mealtime length, for about 15 minutes. If food is leftover, consult your vet for the proper proportion for your pup. Not just food, your pup must always have access to fresh water to help them stay hydrated.

And the contribution is not limited to any one breed. We list below some of the dogs who have made the cut.

1. Labrador-Retrievers

They are respected as service dogs and have been at the forefront of many wars. They are the top pick for the Combat Tracker Teams. Their highly developed sense of smell makes them ideal to track missing, wounded, and downed servicemen and also to detect enemy patrols.

With the Combat Stress Control Unit, they serve as canine therapists to control and prevent stress levels of soldiers who are stationed in combat zones. They are also experts at detecting mines and IEDs. The best military equipment is no match to the Retriever’s exceptional sense of smell. They are equally adept at picking up narcotics and weapon caches. It is estimated that they have a 1000 times stronger sense of smell than a human.

3. Yorkshire Terriers

This spunky breed has gone from being a rat-catching dog to a world war hero. This pint-sized breed gained fame through Smoky who accompanied Corporal Wynne throughout the war in the Pacific. Time and again she saved Wynne’s life. She also is considered the first therapy dog as she kept the smile on the face of countless soldiers during the two years she served in the Pacific.

4. Rottweilers

Rottweilers are extremely intelligent and served with honor in the military. They love to be both mentally and physically active. These Mastiff-type intelligent and rugged animals were integrated into the armies of the Roman Empire. They are extremely vital in search-and-rescue missions.

5. Boxers

They were used as messengers during WWII. The German military approved it as the first breed well-suited for military work way back in the early 1900s. Sgt. Stubby was the most decorated Boxer to serve in WWI. He saved his regiment from mustard gas attacks, traced and comforted the wounded, and even caught a German spy once.

6. Mastiffs

The ancestors of the Mastiff were highly prized as war dogs by the Greek, Romans, Huns, and the Mongols. Armored to kill, the large dogs were used in charges against the ranks of the enemy and also used as dispatch carriers.

7. German Shepherds

When we think of military dogs the German Shepherds come to mind. They are known for their intelligence, dedication, and loyalty which make them the perfect choice for the military. First used by the Germans in WWI, they were used also by the United States by WWII. They were initially used as messenger dogs and then as guard dogs and rescue dogs. They were deployed extensively in Iraq and Afghanistan. Extremely loyal and easy-going, they do not like to be left alone.

Dogs have been at the side of soldiers since the beginning of mankind. Soldiers who interacted with them considered their lives as precious as their comrades’ fighting shoulder to shoulder.

It was only after 2010 that those dogs who provided their service to the nation and laid down their lives in the process were given their due love and respect.
