Fleas and Ticks – Learn How To Get Rid Of Them!

Flea Warning Signs: Dogs

  • Flea droppings (dark specks) in the fur

  • Allergic to Fleas

    Fleas are the most common cause of skin disease in dogs. When a flea bites, it injects saliva into your dog’s skin. This may trigger an allergic reaction. Signs include intense itching, hair loss (especially just in front of the tail), scabs, and red, irritated skin, which may lead to skin infections.

Tick Warning Signs

You can feel ticks when you dog, and you can see them. They most often attach near the head, neck, ears, or paws. Ticks can carry diseases. If you find a tick on your dog, try to remove it as soon as possible.

Safe Ways to Remove Ticks

Skip gasoline, nail polish, petroleum jelly, alcohol, or a hot match. These methods can force infected fluids back into the bite. Instead:

  • Use gloves or tissue to cover your hands.
  • Grasp the tick with tweezers from the side, by its head, close to the skin.
  • Pull straight up. Don’t twist.
  • Don’t squeeze (or pop!) the bloated belly.

Lyme Disease Vaccine for Dogs

There is a vaccine to protect against Lyme disease in dogs who live in or travel to high-risk areas. Ask your vet if your pet needs it.

Shampoos

Flea and tick shampoos are mainly useful for killing the fleas and ticks that are already on your pet. They don’t work as well to prevent ticks. Make sure you get the right kind. Some products for dogs can kill cats. You can buy the shampoo without a prescription, but follow the directions carefully. You need to cover the animal’s entire body and wait 10 minutes before rinsing

Skin Treatments

You put these treatments on your dog back. They work well for a month. Some kill fleas and ticks. Others target fleas and their eggs. Some dog products can kill cats, so ask your vet which product is right for your pet, and follow the instructions.

Keep on top of fleas. Not only can fleas cause infection in your dog, if one is swallowed, your dog can get tapeworms as well. Speak to your veterinarian about the best prevention method, but remember that this is not a one shot deal. You will have to continue your efforts over the life of your dog.

If your dog has fleas, and they fall off his coat onto your floor, vacuum them up. However, remember that fleas are pretty good escape artists, so you need to throw out the bag immediately after you are finished. To be on the safe side, tape the bag completely shut before you take it out to your trash can.

It is very important for you to keep your dog’s ears clean. Keeping the inside of the ears clean will help prevent infections of the ear. This is also a good time for you to inspect the ear for fleas, ticks and any other pests that could have made your dog’s ear home.

Brush your dog often, even if he’s got short hair. It’s good for his coat and skin and can alert you of possible issues like fleas, tics and eczema. The dog will also enjoy the attention and brushing him regularly will keep more of his fur from flying around the house and landing on your furniture and carpets.

Groom your dog frequently. Keep them clean and reduce the amount of hair they shed by brushing them frequently. When the weather warms up, start checking them for ticks and fleas daily. dogs generally require a few baths a year. Before you give your dog a bath, make sure to cut or comb out mats and tangles. Rinse their coat thoroughly to avoid dirt sticking to any soap residue.

When the weather heats up, ticks and fleas become active. Remove any fleas you find with a specialized comb. There are a lot of things on the market that will help you get your dog’s fleas and ticks under control. Speak with your vet about which choices are best.
